Only an instant does this world endure.

Hollie offered a beautiful commentary on this lesson. She shared the image of a rose lit up by the Sun. We can see the rose in its lovely blooming state – this will fade. The rose will die. The Sun reminds us of the eternal life force which will bring life to the next rose.
“Our work today then is to … remember that to be here is to be fully HUMAN and fully DIVINE.” ~ Hollie Holden
Recently, I was in an elective class for seminary on political engagement. Many people in the class saw themselves as activists seeking to do more to solve the problems of the world. In breakout group I spoke with one lady who is doing so much in the world but still questions if it is enough. For my share, I offered my current work as growing in Love to bring loving-kindness into the world. Due to this lesson, I see her seeing just this world, meanwhile my view being on the eternal.
I have written early this year about insights into ‘action and contemplation’. (There seems to be two types of service, active and contemplative, that people tend toward. Teachers like Fr. Richard and Bishop Desmond Tutu speak on needing both in balance.) I see the correlation with today’s thought and this. So, this tells me that it is important to balance both in this mortal life, ‘fully human and fully divine’.
My heart, and hands, are here for this life while being conscious of the eternal flow of Love.

“[Let] no false perception keep us in its hold, nor represent more than a passing cloud upon a sky eternally serene.”
My thoughts go once again to ‘the Prodigal Son’ parable. All the while the son was off following his self- interests, and struggling, there was a loving place, his father’s home, loving him and seeing as his innocent Self.
We all get to choose to return to that place.

I understand the lesson to say that our world lasts just a brief instant. We can take that to reinforce that this is a place of death (nothing lasts) or we can take the pressure off ourselves to release the burdens of this place and time.
Is it all meaningless?
What is eternal is real, so, for us in this world, it would only be Love that has meaning. Let us see everything else we let disturb us, be seen as unimportant. We seek meaning in our lives therefore seeking ways to Love one another is the only sensible path.
